"Fortified" was inspired by the completion of the fortification of the Washington Monument. 
For 10 years, since the Oklahoma City bombing, the Monument has been surrounded by jersey barriers.
Many designs for the Monument's security have been rejected over the years. 

The Monument is now surrounded by a 30" high granite wall - a design that was taken from the 18th century
"haha wall" which served to pen livestock.
