The National Era newspaper used to be located at 7th & F Streets NW. In April 1848 angry mobs gathered there threatening
to destroy the presses after 77 enslaved people had just been caught escaping aboard the Pearl (a sailing ship).
The angry crowd blamed the anti-slavery Era newspaper.
In 1918 there was a law office at 615 F Street where a Howard University law professor worked for freedom for African American.
One of his students was Thurgood Marshall who, later in his life, led the battle which resulted in Brown v. Board of Ed ruling
which ruled racial segregation in schools to be unconstitutional.
