James Garfield
James Garfield was shot by a disgruntled member of the Stalwarts, Charles J. Guiteau. Doctors and scientists (including Alexander Graham Bell) routed around to try and find the bullet which ultimately led to infection and fatal illness. With the hopes that fresh sea air would help him heal, Garfield was transported to the Jersey Shore. He died shortly after.
