"STORYTELLING"
a solo exhibit of paintings by Dana Ellyn at ArtGallery in Norfolk, VA
CLOSING Reception Saturday, January 14th 12:30-3:30pm artist talk at 2:30pm
|
"Storytelling" is an exhibition by independent DC artist Dana Ellyn that invites the viewer to stop, pause, and "read" each of her paintings. Ellyn has been painting professionally for around ten years. She credits her childhood, spent mostly alone and in solitude, as the foundation for the works she creates today. As a child, Ellyn spent the majority of her "happy time" with the door shut to her bedroom, reading books, drawing, and dreaming. Like too many of today's youth, Dana was the child-product of a troubled marriage, resigned to raise herself.
The works included in Ellyn's "Storytelling" exhibition represent the artist's uncanny focused dedication to planning, plotting, and executing unique paintings. Dana Ellyn's process involves a lot of study, a lot of quiet ... door closed. With this exhibition Ellyn presents a body of work inspired from her well-read focus on literary classics, progressive view on current events, and folk art influence. These paintings are presented through the foggy lens of frustration, angst, alcohol, and the ultimate American drive for female independence.
