Grace Hartigan and Frank O’Hara shared a friendship that blurred the boundaries between poetry and painting—each influencing the other in a creative, symbiotic exchange. This piece captures that dynamic: the laughter, the tension, the artistic cross-pollination.
Look closely and you’ll find nods to Hartigan’s Oranges (painted in response to O’Hara’s poem) and a glass of bourbon with orange juice—his signature breakfast drink.
Unavoidably, the painting also hints at my own symbiotic relationship with Matt Sesow—a reminder that art and partnership often unfold in parallel.
