Abraham Lincoln kept two cats in the White House, Tabby and Dixie — gifts from Secretary of State William Seward — and was famously indulgent with them, once feeding Tabby from the table with a gold fork during a formal dinner. When his wife Mary objected, he reportedly replied, "If the gold fork was good enough for former President Buchanan, I think it is good enough for Tabby."

The whiskey, though, is where history and legend part ways. Lincoln actually drank very little — he once said alcohol left him feeling "flabby and undone" — despite having briefly co-owned a general store in New Salem, Illinois, that held a tavern license and sold whiskey by the half-pint. This painting leans into the myth rather than the man: part of Dana Ellyn's ongoing "Drinking with Lincoln" series, imagining the famously sober president with a glass in hand anyway.
