Blattner, who collects Dana’s work, contacted her and asked to use one of her paintings on the cover. Blattner was a visiting researcher with the Animal Law & Policy Program at Harvard Law School from 2018 to 2020.

The painting: Pecking Order

Dana painted Pecking Order in July 2016, in acrylic directly on a print of a black-and-white street photograph by Robert Doisneau, 13 × 10 in. A line of children walks hand in hand across the cobblestones; Dana gave each child a white chicken head with a red comb and yellow beak, and set them against a band of turquoise and green paint.
