Where the
paintings come from

Dana Ellyn and Matt Sesow live, paint, and create together in an 800 square foot studio in downtown Washington, DC. Their space is divided by budget bookcases stacked ceiling-high with paint, supplies, and art books.

Matt and Dana both arrived in Washington, DC in 1989 but didn't meet until 2001. They married in 2010 and have shared a studio at Mather Studios since 2017 — painting side by side every day, five blocks from the White House.

No galleries. No agents. No middlemen. Just two painters and an open door. Together they've sold over 20,000 original works to collectors in more than 40 countries.

Their building — Mather Studios — has been here since 1919, steps from the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and the Gallery Place Metro. It's tiny, it's chaotic, and it's where it all happens.
