"31 Days in the News" (March 2009) This page features paintings from Dana Ellyn's "31 Days in the News" project. Started in July of 2003 (and formerly called "31 Days in July"), Dana creates one new painting per day in response to the daily news capturing each day of the month in a total of 31 unique paintings. New paintings will be posted to this page as they are completed each day.

	March 19, 2009: Baby Love (American Idol Remix) The past 2 years have marked an increase in teenage birthrates (after a decline in rates the previous 14 years). The image for "Baby Love" is a combination of several images and contexts. First and foremost is The Supremes number one hit, "Baby Love". The woman in the painting wears a Diana Ross hairdo and poses like one of The Supremes. To put her in context with today's teens, I've given her a tattoo and several piercings. The dress is inspired by Jan Van Eyck's famous painting "The Arnolfini Marriage" which is a traditional painted portrait of the marriage of two people. The reference to American Idol in the title/painting is because three of the current top female contestants (all under 23 years old) have children which they all had while still in their teens.
