Dropping the Veil

This week, the French parliament voted to ban the full-length veil in public. This news didn't get much coverage in the American press. Today, on the opinion page of the Washington Post, an article on the veil ban made mention of the pioneering Egyptian feminist, Hoda Shaawari ... which inspired today's painting. "In 1923 Shaarawi founded and became the first president of the Egyptian Feminist Union, which sent her to an international feminist meeting in Rome. Upon her return, she removed her face veil in public for the first time, a signal event in the history of Egyptian feminism." (from the Hoda Shaarawi fan page)
