“We Love Arts”

Review of my recent “BANNED” exhibit at MLK library on We Love DC:

“Along with Judy Blume’s Forever, the other book eagerly devoured by girls of my generation was her classic Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret. Though the book’s major theme is the main character’s quest for determining what her religion will be or should be, that’s not what I remember most. It’s the chant Dana portrays in her painting I Must, I Must, I Must Increase My Bust. Girls would scream it down school hallways after reading the book, like rabid cheerleaders.”

“Dana Ellyn - Divina Reverencia”

Extensive interview in Spanish magazine, Standdart

Q: In my opinion, that ‘Nothing is sacred’ tone that surrounds the idea was fantastic. If we respect people believing, why don’t they respect parody? Where’s their sense of humor?

A: I often compare what I do to being a stand-up comedian.  Comedians can say things in their act on stage that someone shouldn’t ever say in “real” life. But when they make their jokes, we laugh – sometimes in spite of ourselves. For me, it’s as if the walls on which my paintings hang are my stage - a place where I can take risks with what I want to express.

Hi and happy August!  There’s lots to cover so I’m going to jump right in.  I hope to see you at one of these upcoming events!
